Under the direction of the Executive Director of Development, the National Director of Development is charged with managing relationships and securing support from alumni and donors nation-wide who are capable of making major gifts to the University. This individual will manage a personal portfolio of 100 – 150 prospects with the majority of these prospects residing outside the state of Arkansas. This position serves as a valued member of the university fundraising team with responsibility for the identification, engagement, solicitation and stewardship of existing and prospective donors across the country. This position will develop and execute strategies for effective cultivation of prospects in a portfolio, will engage prospects, and solicit and close gifts. Nation-wide travel will be expected 75% of the time in this role. This position is governed by state and federal laws, and agency/institution policy.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Qualify, cultivate, and solicit prospective donors at the major gift level for all areas of philanthropic need across campus;
- Develop and propose strategies for solicitation of major gifts, including determining ongoing relationships with prospects/donors, recommending specific purpose and levels of giving, identifying those to be involved in the cultivation and solicitation process and assuring solicitations are carried out;
- Plan and execute development trips based on prospects in specific areas of the country;
- Set and achieve monthly, quarterly, and annual goals for face-to-face visits, proposals submitted, proposals closed, and qualification visits with prospective donors
- Work closely with prospect research to identify potential donors for specific regions across the country;
- Effectively work with directors of development and planned giving team members to strategize on moves management for national prospects with giving interest in all possible areas of campus and planned giving interest;
- Keep accurate records of work through contact reports in the donor management system;
- Must be willing to travel 75% of the time or more in this position;
- Represent the Office of Alumni and Development and/or University at on- and off-campus meetings, conferences, and seminars;
- Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to understand the needs and interests of major donors in order to develop relationships between them and the University;
- Interest in all aspects of education and a dedication to promoting the University’s fundraising priorities through developing excellent working relationships with faculty, senior academic leaders, trustees and other volunteers, and the advancement office team;
- Demonstrated leadership and the ability to successfully manage multi-functional or diverse areas;
- Ability to see and understand the objectives of the directors of development and work with them on national prospects in an effective manner;
- Ability to articulate the case for support so that individuals “buy into” the vision/mission/goals of the university and understand with sufficient effectiveness to secure gifts and pledges of $25,000 or more
- Excellent oral, written, interpersonal, analytical, and organization skills required
- Ability to participate in all aspects of the gift cycle: (1) to initiate contacts with potential major donors; (2) to develop appropriate cultivation strategies for them, including working with volunteers; (3) to move potential donors in an appropriate and timely fashion toward solicitation and closure; (4) to make solicitations when appropriate; and (5) to maintain stewardship contacts with donors
- Must be able to travel 75% of the time around the region and to other areas of the country
- Must have the ability to operate a motor vehicle, hold a valid driver’s license, and have a good driving record to meet state requirements for operating a vehicle while on state business
Required Education and/or Experience
A Bachelor’s Degree and three (3) or more years of development, fundraising, or sales experience with a proven record of fundraising success.
Preferred Education and/or Experience
Master’s degree and experience in higher education fundraising.
